Maginot Line - Immerhof Fortress

PO (Petite Ouvrage) A10 Immerhof was part of the Secteur fortifié de Thionville and is one of the smaller fortresses of the sector. The garrison of the fortress consisted of soldiers from different regiments. The fortress surrendered to the Germans on 25th of June 1940 without fierce combat.

The special thing about this ouvrage is the fact that it was built in the open air and has a barracks on two floors. On the night of June 16, the barrel of an 81mm mortar exploded, wounding one person. The broken barrel could be quickly replaced.

After the war the fortress was kept in active service by NATO, until France retreated the alliance in 1966. Since 1974 it is open for public only by guided tours.
