Artillery Memorial Stones River National Battlefield.

On this hill, fifty-eight cannons were stationed commanding the field across the river. On 2 January, as the Confederates advanced over this field, the shot and shell from these guns resulted in a loss of 1,800 killed and wounded in less than an hour.
The Battle of Stones River (also named Second Battle of Murfreesboro) was fought from 31 December 1862 to 2 January 1863 and resulted in a strategic Union victory. Of the major battles of the Civil War, Stones River had the highest percentage of casualties on both sides. In total, about 3,000 soldiers were killed and 15,000 wounded.
