This memorial with the German name Treue der Union (loyalty to the Union) commemorates the people who were killed in the Nueces massacre. Those who were found back, are also buried here in a mass grave.
In 1862, the Confederate States of America imposed martial law on Central Texas, due to resistance to the Civil War. Sixty-two conscientious objectors, of German ancestry, attempted to flee to Mexico. The Confederate irregular James Duff and his Duff’s Partisan Rangers pursued and overtook them at the Nueces River. Thirty-four were killed, some executed after being taken prisoner.
