Fort Pulaski National Monument

Fort Pulaski is a national memorial with great history. The fort was built in 1812. During the American Civil War the fort played an important role.
Fort Pulaski National Monument preserves Fort Pulaski, on Cockspur Island, where in 1862 during the American Civil War, the Union Army successfully tested rifled cannon in combat, the success of which rendered brick fortifications obsolete. The fort was also used as a prisoner-of-war camp in the American Civil War.

During the Second World War, the fort and Cockspur Island were a base of the U.S. Navy. Nowadays the fort is open to the public.
