Gedung Sate Building

In the years 1910 -1920 the aim was to take over the seat of government from the "unhealthy" and ill-defensible Batavia. The ambitious expansion plan accommodated all government institutions. Gedung Sate, the 1920 building of the Department of Government Enterprises, designed by Ir. J. Gerber, is only a small part of this project. Together with the War Department/Palace for the Army Commander and the Pasteur Institute, this is the only part of the plan that has been realised.

It was taken over by the Japanese in the war and it was attacked on December 3, 1945 by Ghurka fighters of the Commonwealth Army. The attack killed seven Indonesian freedom fighters.
