The National Cemeteries in the U.S.A. are used for graves of war dead, graves of U.S. military personnel, veterans and their spouses but not exclusively so. There are also special state veteran cemeteries.
Togus National Cemetery is divided into two plots, the West Cemetery and the East Cemetery. The older West Cemetery was in 1865 and it closed for interments in 1936. The East Cemetery was opened in 1936 to provide additional interment space. It was closed for interments in 1961. On Togus National Cemetery are more than 5000 graves.
