Dover Hotel

In the Dover Hotel, Ulysses S. Grant received the formal surrender of the Confederate garrison of Fort Donelson.
The Battle of Fort Donelson was fought from 12 to 16 February 1862, in American Civil War. The Union capture of the Confederate fort, near the border betweenTennessee and Kentucky, opened the Cumberland River, an important avenue for the invasion of the South. The Union's victory also elevated Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant from an obscure and largely unproven leader to the rank of major general and earned him the nickname of "Unconditional Surrender" Grant. In the battle, in total over 800 men were killed and 3,000 wounded. Over 12,000 Confederate soldiers surrendered.
