died for the homeland
September 4, 1944
Pierre Dambois was a young officer of the staff of zone V of the Secret Belgian Army. He was one of the initiators of the many drops in this area during April - September 1944.
During these drops also SAS units came along. A group of these came across a group of Belarusians (VLASSOV) on their way to PETITE-SOMME, not far from the castle, on a group of Belarusians (VLASSOV), supporters of the Germans. Lieutenant DAMBOIS, who walked unarmed in front of the paratroopers, was stopped while the SAS paratroopers took cover with surprise in forested undergrowth.
Lieutenant Dambois was seriously injured, taken prisoner and taken to a house in Septon for questioning. This is where the resistance, warned by SAS paratroopers, ambushed the Russians.
It was later learned that Lieutenant Dambois had been killed on the spot at the scene of his arrest. His body was found two days later, hidden behind a hedge, by a young farmer. The body was completely naked, his shoes and civilian clothes had been taken from him, his chest riddled with submachine gun bullets.
