This memorial in the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park commemorates the 2nd Michigan Cavalry Regiment, involved in the Battle of Chickamauga.
In the Battle of Chickamauga, from 18 to 20 September 1863, the Union troops suffered heavy losses and retreated to safety in Chattanooga. On 23 November 1863, the Battles for Chattanooga began when Union forces led by Major General Ulysses S. Grant reinforced troops at Chattanooga and advanced to Orchard Knob against Confederate troops besieging the city. The next day, the Battle of Lookout Mountain was fought, driving the Confederates off the mountain. In the battles, in total 5,100 men were killed and 31,000 wounded.
