This fort was built from 1815 to 1823 and later it is expanded several times. Fort Washington was the only defense for the Nation’s Capital until the Civil War when a circle of temporary forts was built around the city. During World War I the post was used as a staging area for troops being sent to France.During the Second World War, the U.S. Army Adjutant General’s School was located here. There was also a small POW-camp for 200 prisoners-of-war, who worked at the fort.
Nowadays the fort is open to the public.
