After the grim tank clashes which preceded the capture of Caen on July 9, 1944. British tanks are here seen halted in a street, while an anti-tank gun unit sets up at a corner. Engaged in the Normandy fighting was a new British type, the Cromwell tank, which has a 75-mm gun and a special high capacity engine; further hitting power was given to Allied armour by American-built Sherman tanks recently fitted with the famous British long-barreled 17-punder gun.
