The Imperial Service Medal was instituted by King Edward VII on August 8th, 1902. The medal was to be awarded to civil servants (non administrative and no staff functions)who reached at least 25 years of service upon their retirement. For administrative and clerical staff members there excisted the Imperial Service Order.
