Commander Egerton Prize

The award was created in 1901 to commemorate Commander Frederick Greville Egerton, R.N., who died on November 2, 1899, while performing his duties during the defense of Ladysmith.

Every year, the Royal Naval Officer who passes the practical gunnery exam with the highest score and is eligible to become a gunnery lieutenant was given the Commander Egerton Prize.

Dividends from Egerton's family's £800 donation, which was invested in government securities, were used to pay for the prize.
