Biography

Erle was born on December 24 1921 in Abilene Alberta, the son of Corporal Clarke Collins Foster (English), RCEME Workshop, Prince George, British Columbia and Sadie Marie Foster (Irish) of Wainwright Alberta. They were married on April 11 1922 in Edmonton.

He was the brother of Norman C. and Frances E. Foster.

He was a CNR section man and member of the United Church. His hobbies were a little radio, fair gun shooting and some hunting.

He enlisted on June 9 1941 in Edmonton and he went on September 1 1942 thereafter overseas to the UK. He went on July 22 1944 afterwards to France.
Erle was killed in action on Saturday September 9 1944 age 22 during the battle of Moerbrugge in Belgium. He was temporarily buried then in a parc in Loppem together with the fallen Sergeant Eric A. Holton before both being reburied on June 5 1945 in Adegem.

On his headstone: IN LOVING AND HONORED MEMORY OF OUR BELOVED SON AND BROTHER

The National Combattants Association Belgium (N.S.B.) Sector of Loppem (near Zedelgem, Belgium) have erected a Memorial Stone in memory of Erle Foster and the fallen Sgt Eric A. Holton of the Royal Canadian Artillery. The memorial was unveiled at a special commemorative ceremony on June 15, 2002.

He served with the 29th Armd. Reconnaissance Regt. of the South Alberta Regiment.
