"Sjt. DE BOER was attached to the 8th. Bn. THE ROYAL SCOTS on 8 Oct 1944 as official Interpreter. Since that date, until the close of the campaign 8 May 1945, he has been with the Bn continuously, never missing a day at duty.
In battle Sjt. DE BOER always accompanied Tactical Bn HQ and frequently carried out most valuable work with the foremost coys - he showed complete fearlessness under fire and a utter disregard for personal danger.
At MEIJEL in Holland he accompanied a daylight fighting patrol into an enemy village in order to interrogate captured prisoners and local civilians at the first possible moment. The village was continuously under shell and mortar fire, but Sjt De Boer remained there for nearly 12 hours at work - this information he brought back was of the greatest value to a later succesful attack on the village.
Sjt. de Boer throughout these eight months has been quite untiring in his work of interpreting military orders, interrogating PW, liaison with enemy civilian authorities, arresting war criminals, and controlling Displaced Persons. He has shown a devotion to duty and a zeal for work of the very highest order - he has never spared himself, and frequently worked after normal hours and throughout the night, if he considered the circumstances so demanded.
By his conscientious application to duty, his ready acceptance of hard work, his never failing cheerfulness, Sjt DE BOER has become a most valuable and respected member of this battalion. He is most strongly recommended for an award in keeping with the services he has rendered in the British Army."
