"Whilst acting as Observer to Lieutenant E. E. Turner on patrol duty, during a hostile air raid, he showed great courage and ability. Although exposed to severe fire from the enemy he took prompt advantage of the skilful piloting of his machine, which enabled him to bring effective fire on his antagonist, as a result of which the enemy aeroplane was badly damaged and forced to land."

For shooting down the Gotha GV/979/16 from Kampfgruppe 3/17 during the night of 19 and 20 May 1918. In this Vizefeldwebel Albrecht Sachtler (pilot) and Leutnant Joachim Flathow (observer) were killed in action and Unteroffizier Hermann Tache (gunner) was taken prisoner of war.
