The following newspaper excerpt (dated 04.02.1944) describes why Kunsch received the Knight’s Cross…
“During the combat south of Gomel the Soviets succeeded in pushing a strong march column through the security line of a German bridgehead. However Hauptmann Erwin Kunsch… and his Silesian-Pomeranian Grenadiers launched a bold counterthrust, and they were able to both smash the column and annihilate the Soviet baggage train. This brave officer subsequently died a hero’s death while in the process of launching an attack on his own initiative against Soviet forces that were threatening the neighbouring Bataillon.”
Awarded posthumously.
