"For conspicuous gallantry and initiative west of Mont Houy on 29th October, 1918. Hearing that the Commander of a neighbouring platoon of infantry had no Lewis gun available to repel an enemy counter-attack, he immediately volunteered to go out and bring in some enemy machine guns. He collected two enemy machine guns and several boxes of ammunition, and put them in working order, and handed them over to the infantry. He set a splendid example of determination and initiative."
