Awarded for his leadership of the XXXXIX. Gebirgs-Korps in late 1944. This unit fought on the Carpathian front during this time, defending against the Soviet offensive launched against the Armeegruppe Heinrici starting in September 1944. However the Germans were consistently able to clean up Soviet penetrations with successful counterattacks, with the result that after five weeks of hard fighting the Soviet offensive was suspended. General der Gebirgstruppe von Le Suire had played a major role in this achievement through the employment of his tactical and operational talents, and was for this decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
