    Biography

Johannes Rombout, pseudonym "Jan Staart" (after the neighbourhood in Dordrecht where he lived) was a resistance fighter and crosser from Dordrecht. Among other things, he helped people in hiding, smuggled weapons, distributed illegal printed matter and carried the crew members of shot-down aircraft to safety.

In the winter of 1945, he joined the Liniecrossers and carried persons and intelligence through the Biesbosch to liberated territory for the Albrecht Group. He made an unknown number of crossings between occupied and liberated territory including those with doctors Graeme Warrack and Alexander Lipmann Kessel of the 1st British Airborne Division who escaped near Arnhem.

In April 1945, he left for Germany with people from IS9 and worked for British intelligence there until the German capitulation.

Johannes Rombout was awarded The Bronze Lion, The Resistance Memorial Cross and the Medal of Freedom with Silver Palms for his work.
