Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Luitenant-Kolonel (Lieutenant-Colonel)
Unit:
1st Macedonian Kosovo Brigade
Citation:
"From September 1943 to April 1944 Lt.Colonel Brajovic was in command of the 1st MACEDONIAN KOSOVO Brigade. An Allied Mission was attached to this Brigade, and throughout this period Lieut.Colonel BRAJOVIC was consistently helpful, courteous and considerate to the Mission. It was due to his example that friendly relations were established between the partisans and the Mission in that area.

Late in January 1944, Lieut.Col. BRAJOVIC recieved instructions from Cairo to sabotage the ALLATINI chrome mines south of SKOPJE. From 1st February to 14th February, he and the Brigade under his command moved North and they were involved for fouteen days in the most bitter fighting under adverse weather conditions against superior BULGARIAN forces.
On three occasions his Brigade was surrounded and ten major actions took place. His men were unable to sleep on nine of the fourteen nights and six conseccutive days were spent in constant fighting. many of his men died from exposure.
On one occasion he and his men were forced to swim across the 200 fett wide River CRNA at midnight in a snowstorm. By his personal example Lieut. Colonel BRAJOVIC kept his men together during and after the crossing, comparatively few casualties being suffered.

On 9th February 1944, Lieut Col BRAJOVIC three times crossed a road which was under heavy machine gun fire to rally and encourage detachments of partisans who had become separated from the main brigade group.
On another occasion he again crossed the road under heavy fire and brought a wounded partisan on his back.

In a numer of other actions from September 1943 to January 1944, his Brigade attacked and destroyed 2000 Bulgarian and German troops.
His Brigade carried out a number of train derailments and destroyed more than 20 tanks, several guns and motor vehicles and a number of railway engines and other rolling stock.

For nearly all this time, Lieut.Colonel BRAJOVIC's men were underfed, badly clothed and short of ammunition and explosives. It was entirely due to his outstanding powers of leadership, to his courage and to his personal example that the partisans became such and effective force, and it is recommended that this very gallant officer be appointed a Companion in the Distinguished Service Order."
