Awarded for his leadership of a Regiments-Kampfgruppe in April 1945. In this time he and his men fought in the Rhine area, near Großenkneten and around Kirchhatten. At Kirchhatten Lier and his 6 Kompanien defended against the 6th Canadian Infantry Brigade for some time, though a counterattack on the 23.04.1945 was ultimately unsuccessful.
Unnumbered awarding accoridng to the Dönitz Erlass, would have been the 869th Awarding.
