Awarded for his successes as the vanguard leader of his Kampfgruppe during the Battle of France. On the 17.05.1940, while commanding a reinforced Panzer Kompanie and a rifle company, Löwe succeeded in taking the river and canal bridges over the Oise undamaged after a short but bitter round of street fighting. These bridges were crucial for the continued advance of the Division. The next day he played a decisive role in capturing the staff of the French 9th Army in Le Catelet. Later, on the 20.05.1940, he forced a path through the heavily defended village of Doullens with his Kompanie.
