"This officer carried out a hazardous mission with complete success despite navigational difficulties and adverse weather conditions. On a previous occasion, when returning from an operational mission Squadron Leader Murphy passed over an enemy convoy at the low altitude of 100 feet. He noted its position, counted the ships and observed their course and then reported the information to base. The information proved of great value. This officer has invariably displayed great courage and initiative."
"On five recent occasions, at night, this officer has carried out operations demanding .the highest qualities of skill and organisation. Squadron Leader Murphy has personally organised his flight, and trained his pilots. He has displayed inspiring leadership."
"Since being awarded the D.S.O. this officer has participated in a large number of sorties, involving attacks on a wide range of targets. In these operations, Wing Commander Murphy has most effectively attacked many enemy locomotives; he has also been responsible for the destruction of 2 enemy aircraft and very many mechanical vehicles during the period. His outstanding skill, gallant leadership and iron determination have been reflected in the fine fighting qualities of his squadron which has won much success."
