Distinguished himself by courageous action in the face of the enemy as a member of a resistance group in Made, North Brabant, which in the second half of 1944 was part of the so-called Biesbosch group with the aim of disarming retreating German soldiers in the Biesbosch and holding them prisoner until they could be surrendered on the Brabant rampart. He regularly brought small groups of German soldiers across the Amer and then captured them, sometimes having to use arms if the surrender did not take place in good faith. In these skirmishes, he showed himself to be a fearless leader.
