The following newspaper article (dated 05.05.1943) describes why Moritz was awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“Fearless Pomeranian Reiter Throws Back the Enemy: Rittmeister Georg-Friedrich Moritz (from Schmolsin) decorated with the Knight’s Cross to the Iron Cross while in the East / Successful counterthrust with 26 Reitern
The Führer has awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross to Rittmeister Georg-Friedrich Moritz, Schwadron commander in a Radfahr-Abteilung…
Rittmeister Moritz and his East Pomeranian Aufklärungs-Schwadron had successfully fended off heavy enemy attacks south of Lake Ilmen over the course of three days. On the fourth day the Schwadron was pulled back into reserve, however a few hours afterwards a group of 200 bolsheviks penetrated into the foremost German lines. Rittmeister Moritz immediately commenced a counterthrust at the head of just 26 Reitern and threw back the enemy, who lost over 100 dead in the process.
The population of East Pomerania (and in particular of Stolp) are proud of their new Knight’s Cross Holder, and warmly congratulate him on this high honour.”
