When the Second World War started, Ralf Graf von Oriola commanded the Artillerie-Regiment 252. With this regiment he took part in the invasion of the Soviet Union. At the end of 1941 he took over command of Artillerie-Regiment 18 with the rank of Oberst and was promoted to Generalleutnant on 1st November 1943. In December 1943 he assumed command over 299.Infanterie-Division. His last position before the end of the Second World War was that of Kommandeur XIII.Armeekorps.
