Roy’s Knight’s Cross recommendation reads as follows…

“During the morning hours of the 09.08.1944 enemy tanks broke through the strongpoint-like German frontline near Soignolles and into the rear of Kampfgruppe Waldmüller. They took up positions on Hill 111, and from this point were able to control all supply routes in the area.

SS-Oberscharführer Roy received the order to take his Panzerjäger 39, engage the enemy tanks and destroy them. With boldness and mobility, Roy stalked the enemy vehicles and was able to destroy 9 English tanks in a short time. By this he made it possible for the ordered German retreat movement to be carried out that evening.

As the Kampfgruppe began its ordered withdrawal at 21:30 hours so as to avoid destruction by the constantly overwatching enemy guns, hostile tanks launched a surprise thrust into the middle of the Kampfgruppe as they moved towards Soignolles. SS-Oberscharführer Roy took the enemy tanks in the flank on his own initiative. Of the 15 attacking enemy tanks, only 2 were able to escape intact.

On this day SS-Oberscharführer Roy destroyed 13 tanks, and in the space of five days his total was 26. By this he raised his total of destroyed enemy armour to 36 English and Russian AFVs.”
