Collani’s Knight’s Cross recommendation was sent by radio and reads as follows…
“The Regiment ‘de Ruyter’ under the command of SS-Obersturmbannführer Collani has stood in the thick of the fighting and repulsed major armoured attacks. By doing so it prevented an enemy breakthrough towards Reval, however in the process the regimental commander died a heroic death. It is requested that the deceased receive a belated award of the Knight’s Cross to the Iron Cross.”
The document refers to the successes of the Regiment during the fighting on the Narwa front in summer 1944.
This medal was posthumously awarded. He was also promoted posthumously to SS-Standartenführer (Colonel).
