based on a recommendation dated 02.04.1943 and signed by Div. Fhr. Max Simon; approved by Korps Kom. Gen. Paul Hausser.
Masarié’s Knight’s Cross recommendation reads as follows…

“On the 14.03.1943 SS-Hauptsturmführer Masarie and his Aufklärungs-Abteilung had the mission of reconnoitring the Kharkov—Belgorod highway towards the north. The first patrol (which was sent out at 04:30) reported that the village of Lipzy was heavily occupied by the enemy, and thereby blocked the route of the Abteilung. In this situation SS-Hauptsturmführer Masarie made the decision to attack Lipzy with his weak Aufklärungs-Abteilung in order to clear his march route and simultaneously sever hostile communications between the Kharkov—Belgorod highway and Woltschansk. SS-Hauptsturmführer Masarie struck Lipzy in a bold attack and ejected the bitterly fighting defenders from the village despite the fact that they outnumbered him. In this battle the following was captured or destroyed:

1 tank
4 armoured cars
28 light vehicles
3 tractors
1 ammunition dump with artillery and mortar rounds
8000 litres of diesel fuel
6 motorcycles
Over 100 dead Red Army soldiers (compared to minimal friendly personnel losses).

The attack that SS-Hauptsturmführer Masarie launched against Lipzy on his own initiative laid the groundwork for the successful attack that SS-Pz.Gren.Div. ‘Totenkopf’ later conducted towards the northeast. The determined counterattacks that the Russians carried out here demonstrated that the enemy placed a great deal of value on recapturing the village.

In recognition of this heroic deed and the success that it produced, I ask that SS-Hauptsturmführer Masarie be awarded the Knight’s Cross to the Iron Cross.”

In Fellgiebel the unit is written as SS-Pz-Aufkl-Abt 3 "Totenkopf"
