On the 27.06.1944 the Aukfl.Abt. 5 set out from the Ssloboda area (20 km north of Borissow) on its ordered reconnaissance mission. But during a Soviet attack on the evening of the next day it was struck in the rear and split into two parts. One portion of the Abteilung was pushed back to the large dam/bridge near at Ziembin, whilst the other portion was similarly forced back south of Studenka. In response a Kampfgruppe of the Pz.Rgt. 31 under the command of Oberstleutnant von Plato was sent to provide the Abteilung with much needed aid.

Early on the 29.06.1944 the Soviets set out from Studenka. One force moved west, crossed the Beresina river and attacked Ziembin from the south. Another group attacked towards the south in the direction of Borissow. However both attacks were fended off by Plato’s Kampfgruppe, and by the following day the Aufkl.Abt. 5 had been freed from its predicament.

von Plato would later receive the Knight’s Cross for his actions here.
