On the 12.01.1944 the French expeditionary corps launched an attack on the German positions in Italy. One of the attacking units was the 3rd Algerian Division, which had the aim of taking the summits of Mount Casale and Mount Acquafondata, and thereafter moving to S.Elia. During this attack Hauptmann Pöschl prevented the bypassing of the defenses of the 5. Gebirgs-Division in a decisive location, which resulted in him being recommended for the Knight’s Cross.
