On August 1, 1913 Schlemmer was assigned to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion of the
Bavarian Army. With the beginning of the First World War Schlemmer moved with
the 5th Field Artillery Regiment "King Alfonso XIII. from Spain " , in the function of
a train and battery leader, from Landau into the field.
This was followed by promotions to Lieutenant (December 1914) and Lieutenant (April 1918).
In 1934 Schlemmer was promoted to Major. A year later, he was assigned as a group leader at the Army Weapons Office due to the rearmament to the Reich Ministry of War.
On March 16, 1937, the promotion to lieutenant colonel followed. After the Blomberg-Fritsch crisis in 1938 he was appointed to the Army High Command. In the same year he was given command of the Mountain Artillery Regiment 111 in Innsbruck, which he led after his promotion to Colonel in 1939 during the Polish campaign. Afterwards Schlemmer received the command of the artillery regiment 7, with which he participated in the west campaign.
As of December 17, 1941, he commanded the 134th Infantry Division on the eastern front in the Moscow area.
In 1942 he was first promoted to Major General, 1943 Lieutenant General.
In 1944 he was given command of the LXXV. Army Corps, which fought in Italy at the side of Marshal Graziani. In the same year he received the rank of general of the mountain troops.
At the end of the war, he fell into American captivity, from which he was released on 17 June 1947.

During this timeframe Schlemmer’s direction was a key factor in ensuring that his by then exhausted Division was able to repulse a total of 59 Soviets attacks from company all the way to divisional strength, inflicting heavy losses in the process. The result was that the attempt by the Soviet 61st Army to break through in the direction of Orel, while nearly succeeding, was ultimately broken.
