“Hauptmann von Arentschildt had already served as an example for both his men and the Division through his personal bravery during the Polish campaign. While fighting near Ilza (south of Radom) his Kompanie repeatedly subdued and crushed those enemy forces attacking out of the forests during an engagement that lasted throughout the late night hours and into the early morning. By doing so it made a significant contribution to victory here. Later, during the French campaign, it was once again Hauptmann von Arentschildt who led his men with great prudence and ruthlessness.”
Arentschildt himself noted which actions in the battle of France led him to be awarded the Knight’s Cross. These were:
1.) The capture of La Capelle along with two horse-drawn artillery batteries located there (16.05.1940).
2.) Moving out from the Guise airfield and capturing the Oise-Sambre canal crossing near Tupigny (17.05.1940).
