Korpsgruppe Breith formed the southern group of the German forces in the Kamenets-Podolsky pocket, and like the northern group it launched a breakout towards the west. In order to halt their progress, the Soviets launched a flank attack against it with the 11th Tank Corps. On the 05.04.1944, near Okopy, this Soviet tank corps crossed to the north side of the Dniester and began their attack. However they were defeated by the defensive efforts of Gruppe Gollnick (which included the Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung 210) and thrown back across the Dniester. In this abortive attack the Soviets lost 35 tanks, of which the lion's share were inflicted by Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung 210 under the command of Major Sichelschmidt. For his Abteilung’s decisive role in repelling this hostile attack, Sichelschmidt was recommended for and received the Knight's Cross.
