The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why Weisenberger received the Knight’s Cross…

“Following a gruelling succession of forest battles in the area before the eastern breakthrough points of the Maginot Line, Generalleutnant Weisenberger led his Division to the ring of forts around Fortress Verdun over a series of day and night marches. This was done with such speed that the enemy defensive line Samogneur—Romagne was broken through, and the Division itself was able to penetrate into the hostile frontline at Verdun. In all this time the General distinguished himself through his exemplary calm, ruthlessness, tirelessness and leadership abilities in the foremost line.”
