The following wartime excerpt describes why Bieler was awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“On the 12.08.1941 the enemy surprised the Division by once again offering up spirited resistance in the area around Nemerlejeff farm (located west of the Bug river) behind those lead elements of the Division that had already reached the Bug. Generalleutnant Bieler’s command post was now in immediate proximity to the enemy, but despite being heavily threatened from the rear and flanks the commander continued to lead from this position. Thanks to his excellent leadership and bold decisions on the battlefield it was possible to conclude the battle of annihilation successfully on the 14.08.1941.”
