Biography

Konrad "Pit" Bauer was born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on February 9th, 1919.

Bauer served as Unteroffizier with 10. / Jagdgeschwader 51 at the Easter Front in March 1943. On March 20th he scored his first victory. In September he was stationed with the Geschwaderstab of Jagdgeschwader 51. At the Eastern Front he clamed a total of 18 victories.
By March 1944 Bauer was transferred to 2. / Jagdgeschwader 3 at the homefront in Germany. Here he scored his first four engined bomber kill (Boeing B-17) on April 18th.
Konrad Bauer was transferred to 5. / Jagdgeschwader 300 in June 1944. Here he flew the Focke-Wulf A-8/R2. With this unit he shot down a total of 29 four engined bombers. After shooting down three American North American P-51 fighters on 11th September, he was shot down himself in his Fw 190 A-8 (W.Nr. 681 469) "Red 21".
Towards the end of January 1945, Bauer became Staffelkapitän with 5. / Jagdgeschwader 300. He was recommended to receive the Eichenlaub to the Eisernes Kreuz, but it was not awarded anymore.

Konrad Bauer flew a total of 416 operational sorties, during which he shot down a total of 68 enemy aircraft. This total included 18 on the Eastern Front and 32 four-engined bombers. He was himself shot down seven times.

After the Second World War, Bauer joined the Bundeswehr until he retired on December 31st, 1960 with the rank of Hauptmann.
He died in Gelsenkirchen on June 17th, 1990.
