Awarded for his record as a bomber pilot during missions over England and the Soviet Union. He particularly distinguished himself in the opening stages of Operation Barbarossa, where on the northern sector of the Eastern front he scored several hits on buildings at a Soviet aero-engine factory, causing extensive damage. Later, during a lone night raid, he scored 4 hits on an aircraft factory and put it out of operation for some time.

By the time of his death in 1943 he had flown about 130 sorties spanning all the major theatres.
