The following wartime excerpt describes why Both was awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“Thanks to the clear and purposeful leadership of General von Both, the Korps and its subordinated Divisionen were able to thrust out of the vicinity of Naumiestis (east of Heydekrug) as far as Schaulen over the course of a 5 day advance despite fierce Russian resistance and the difficult terrain. With the capture of Schaulen the Russians lost both a key defensive position and the main supply base for their soldiers in the area before 18. Armee. Despite the great difficulties involved, General von Both was always forward and with his men. Early on the 22.06.1941 he personally conducted important reconnaissance at the Jura river, and the result was that the Russians were unable to maintain their positions.”
