15.09.1940-09.08.1943: appointed Techn.Offz. of 8./ KG 27 'Boelcke'
Between1941 and 1943: awarded the Ehrenpokal and the DKiG, but dates could be made difficult to determined due to there were two pilots named Karl Schmid serving in the Kampfgeschwader 27 'Boelcke' at the same period
04.1942: Oberfeldwebel with 8./ KG 27
12.1942: transferred to 14.(Eis)/ KG 27 'Boelcke'
02.1943: promoted to Leutnant
11.03.1943: Leutnant, appointed Techn.Offz. of 14.(Eis)/ KG 27 'Boelcke'
01.08.1943: in KG 27, promoted to Oberleutnant with RDA 01.11.1940
09.08.1943: in 14.(Eis)/ KG 27 'Boelcke', POW when his He 111 H-16 Werknummer 160277 coded '1G+HY' was shot down by soviet flak while making a low-level attack against railway targets in the Belgorod-Kursk area - survived the crash
