The following newspaper excerpt (dated 01.03.1943) describes why Brockdorff-Ahlefeldt was awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“During the fighting southeast of Toropez, Graf von Brockdorff-Ahlefeldt personally launched a bold flanking attack from the foremost line against far superior enemy forces that had broken through between the German strongpoints. He threw back the enemy force through this independently conducted action, largely destroying it. A few days later he was badly wounded while conducting another such attack on his own initiative with his Kradschützen.
He was awarded the Knight’s Cross to the Iron Cross on the 26th of December for his brave conduct.”
