Wolff was awarded the Knight's Cross for his achievements as commander of Flak-Regiment 37 during the fighting around Stalingrad. He personally directed the units of his Regiment during the advance of the XIV. Panzer-Korps to the Volga on the 23.08.1942. In the fighting that followed his AA guns played a key role in defending the German gains against Soviet counterattacks.
