The following wartime excerpt describes why Barby was awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“Oberstleutnant von Barby was involved in the thick of the combat in the Marmarica with his Bataillon, and despite sustaining heavy losses he repeatedly led his men to successful attacks during this time through a combination of fearlessness and personal example. On the 30.11.1941 he stormed at the head of his Bataillon during the attack against Sidi Rezegh, the ultimate result of which was the throwing back of the English forces that had sought to restore contact with Tobruk.”
At the time of the awarding of the Knightscross he also was Führer of a Kampfgruppe.
