On the 22.08.1942, within the context of the heavy defensive combat around Rzhev, a group of 8 Soviet tanks rolled against the sector of the 7./Infanterie-Regiment 41 (mot). In the fighting which followed Unteroffizier Betz personally destroyed 6 of these in close combat. Already wounded in the thigh while defeating the 5th tank, he received fatal wounds while taking on the 6th one and succumbed to these a short while afterwards. He would later be awarded the Knight’s Cross for his success and sacrifice on the battlefield.
