Awarded for his Division’s major victory around Poltava during Operation Barbarossa. He and his Division eliminated the city’s tank-supported garrison and took over its control. After this, during the late evening hours, he and his men captured the bridge over the Worsla river along the Poltava-Kharkov road in an intact state, building a small bridgehead as they did so. All of this amounted to a great operational success that gave the higher commands the opportunity to send strong forces in the direction of Kharkov via Poltava.
