On the 09.06.1940 Boeselager and a handful of the men from his Schwadron swam across the Seine river and created a bridgehead on the opposite bank. Boeselager went on to expand this bridgehead by seizing the village of Villers. Later, on the 16.06.1940, he led his Schwadron in a flank attack against the French and succeeded in capturing a battery that was significantly hindering the forward progress of the Vorausabteilung.
Boeselager was awarded the Knight’s Cross for distinguishing himself during these two actions.
On the 04.10.1941 Boeselager’s Schwadron and its attached bicycle elements captured Komarj after a ruthless advance, and from here they established a bridgehead over the Lebasmuna stream. By doing this the Bjeloj—Cholm road was blocked, something which in turn obstructed the Soviet retreat route from the Bjeloj area back to the Dnieper position. Boeselager would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this action as well as his consistent excellence during Operation Barbarossa.
