Awarded for distinguishing himself in the Courland bridgehead southeast of Libau, southwest of Frauenburg and in particularly on the 26.03.1945 while southeast of Schrunden. Here he eliminated numerous enemy resistance nests and spearheaded the effort to eliminate a Soviet penetration. This succeeded, with the result that a Soviet regiment was trapped in a tube-like pocket behind the frontline. A portion of these troops broke out, however the remainder were destroyed on the following day.
