Awarded for his actions in mid-July 1943. In this time he and his reinforced Kampfgruppe were deployed to eliminate a Soviet penetration east of Orel. In the unclear situation he and his men marched to the break-in point, set up a blocking position and then held it against fierce Soviet attacks. Oberstleutnant Buck led his Panzergrenadiers in an assault against a village on his own initiative, and by doing so he improved the situation at the frontline. In the subsequent combat the attacks of a Soviet rifle division and elements of a Guards tank brigade were smashed.
