The following regimental order of the day, dated 02.10.1940, describes why Daumiller was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“On the 29.09.1940 the Führer and Supreme Commander of the Wehrmacht awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross to Oberleutnant Daumiller, commander of the 11./G.J.R. 98.

He received this for capturing the heavily fortified village of Bethancourt (on the Aisne-Oise canal) on the 06.06.1940 at the head of his Kompanie and on his own initiative. This village was of decisive importance for both the Division and (especially) the left neighbour. Furthermore, as a result of his very skillful approach to and ingenious conduct of this battle, he managed to capture a large number of toughly defending French soldiers and their officers at the cost of only minor friendly losses.

On behalf of every soldier in the Regiment, I give my best congratulations to this extremely brave officer, one who has similarly distinguished himself at every other opportunity.
